Before a recruiter reads your resume, they scan it. Eye-tracking research is usually cited at somewhere around 6 to 10 seconds for that first pass.
That is the whole audition. What they find in those seconds decides whether anything else on the page gets read.
Where Recruiters Look First
Your name and headline. Can they tell what role you are going for?
Your current or most recent job title and company. Is it relevant to this posting?
Previous titles and dates. Is there a clear progression, and are there unexplained gaps?
Education and certifications. A quick check, unless the role requires something specific.
Keywords from the posting. Do the skills they asked for appear, in plain language?
What Changed in 2026
Software now reads your resume before a person does at many companies. That changes what matters:
Columns, tables, text boxes, and icons can scramble when parsed
Keywords need to match the posting's language, not just your own wording
A simple, single-column layout with standard headings is the safest format
If you have been rejected within hours of applying, this is often why. Here is what is actually happening with AI resume screening.
The 10-Second Self-Test
Hand your resume to a friend for 10 seconds, then take it back and ask:
What role am I going for?
Where did I work most recently?
What is one thing I achieved?
If they can't answer all three, a recruiter can't either.
Quick Fixes That Move the Needle
Put a target title or headline at the top, matched to the role
Lead each bullet with a result, and add a number where you honestly can
Shrink older roles to one or two lines
Mirror the posting's wording for skills you genuinely have
Cut anything that doesn't support the job you are applying for
Final Thought
Most resumes aren't rejected because the person is unqualified. They are rejected because the right information wasn't visible fast enough.
Fix what shows up in the first few seconds, and everything below it finally gets a chance.
