Interviewers have heard "I work too hard" and "I'm a perfectionist" hundreds of times. A better answer is honest, small and already being fixed.

The 55 Interview Answers That Get People Hired gives you ready-made structures for this question and the other tricky ones.

This question is not a trap. The interviewer wants to see whether you know yourself, whether you take feedback, and whether you are working on getting better. A good answer covers all three in about 30 seconds.

The formula

A real weakness, a specific example, and what you are doing about it. The weakness should not be a core requirement of the job.

Template

❝

"One area I'm working on is [weakness]. For example, [short real situation]. I noticed it, so I started [specific fix], and since then [small result]. It's still something I keep an eye on."

Examples that work

Delegating

❝

"I used to take on too much myself instead of delegating. After a project slipped, I started writing down who owns what in week one. My last two projects shipped on time and the team told me they felt more trusted."

Public speaking

❝

"Presenting to large groups has never felt natural. I joined a monthly practice group and now present our team update every month. It's much easier, though I still prepare more than most."

Saying no

❝

"I used to say yes to every request, which stretched my deadlines. Now I check my priorities first and offer a later date when I'm full. It has made my work more reliable."

Answers to avoid

  • "I'm a perfectionist." It sounds like a rehearsed brag.

  • "I don't have any weaknesses." This signals low self-awareness.

  • A weakness that is the job. Do not tell an accountant you are bad with numbers.

  • A story with no fix. Always finish on what you are doing about it.
